The Mammoth Museum of Barcelona was a paleontology museum dedicated to the animals of the ice age, with a rich collection of skeletons and other life-size reconstructions of prehistoric animals.

Born in 2010, his collection comes largely from paleontological sites in Siberia. The museum is laid out long seven thematic rooms, where visitors can interact with most of the exhibits, so it is possible to touch the teeth or tusks of a mammoth with your own hands, or smell the horn of a long-haired rhino. A section with Mammoth ivory works and the reproduction of rock paintings complete the museum's exhibition.
Especially suitable for the little ones, the museum offers a range of additional educational activities, including workshops and guided tours in Spanish, English and French. Among the curiosities of the museum it is certainly worth mentioning the possibility of buying an authentic Mammoth tusk (for sale in the internal shop), or, for the most passionate lovers of paleontology, an entire prehistoric skeleton of the Pleistocene.
The museum is located in an area of ​​high historical value in Barcelona, ​​the Montcada Street, in the middle of the La Ribera district, with numerous buildings from the Gothic period, many of which can be visited: the Picasso Museum and the Museum of World Cultures are a few tens of meters along the same street, as well as the MEAM (European Museum of Modern Art). The same building that houses the museum is a historic building, called the house of the custody, was built at the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, with several alterations from later periods. Inside it is possible to see an interesting XNUMXth-century Gothic gallery, built with stones from nearby Montjuïc.
Useful Information
During the weekend, after the guided tour, it is possible to participate in a game for the whole family (included in the ticket price), from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00. Guided tours are offered several times a day and last 90 minutes, however they are not available in Italian. The Mammoth museum is fully accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.
How to get to the Mammoth museum
The Mammoth Museum is located in Carrer Montcada 1, in the La Ribera district. The closest metro stop is Jaume I (yellow L4). Once out of the station take Carrer Princesa, after about 200 meters you will find Carrer Princesa, turn left, after about twenty meters you will find the entrance to the museum. By bus you can take line 120, with a stop in Carrer Princesa, or lines 17, 19, 40 and 45 with a stop on Via Laietana, a few meters from the underground station. The museum can also be reached on foot in a few minutes from the Barri Gòtic: the distance from the Cathedral is about 400 meters. With the Bus TurĂstic you have to get off at the Pla de Palau red line stop.
Working Time
The Mammoth Museum opens from 10:00 to 20:00 during winter hours (from October 31st to May 10st), and from 00:21 to 00:30 during summer hours (from June 25st to September XNUMXth). The museum is closed on XNUMX December and XNUMX January.
tickets
The admission price for an adult is 7,50€; groups of 7 or more pay € 5 each, as do school or university students. Children under 15 and over 65 pay € 3,50, while admission is free for children under 5. Barcelona Card holders are entitled to a 50% discount on the admission price.
